Maritime Museum
Cohasset Historical Society
The Maritime Museum was constructed in the mid-18th century by Samuel Bates, a prominent sea captain and businessman. Originally known as the Bates Ship Chandlery, it outfitted Bates’ fleet of schooners as well as other vessels and supplied the families of sailors and others with a variety of dry goods. The two-story, wood-framed, clapboard building was given to the Historical Society in 1954 and, in 1957, it was moved to Elm Street from its original location on Border Street. The building was subsequently restored and now houses a collection of artifacts and artwork related to Cohasset’s long history as a maritime-centered community.
The Maritime Museum is open on Thursday - Sunday in the summer and by appointment for the rest of the year. Check out the Society’s website for the most up-to-date hours of operation.
