Step back in time with the Cohasset Historical Society’s latest exhibit, Summer Afternoons on the Lawn in Cohasset: 1900s–1920s. This exhibition celebrates the elegance and charm of summer social fashions, highlighting the Society’s Costume and Textile Collection.
At the heart of the exhibit are the iconic white “lingerie dresses” of the era, designed for stylish afternoons in the New England heat. Contrary to their name, these dresses reflect the lightness of materials like cotton lawn, muslin, and handkerchief linen, not undergarments.
Discover the intricate craftsmanship of these garments, adorned with delicate embroidery, lace, net, crochet, pin tucks, ruffles, and ribbons. These elements, combined with evolving silhouettes, capture the shifting tides of women’s fashion from the Edwardian era through the Roaring Twenties.
Join us and explore how summer fashions of the 1900s–1920s combined beauty, practicality, and innovation to adapt to changing times and capture the essence of leisurely outdoor living in Cohasset.
Exhibit runs from April 1 to August 29, 2025 | Monday – Friday, 9:00am – 1:00 pm
Admission: Free to Members, $5 Non-Members
